Frequently Asked Questions
What is Spray Polyurethane Foam?A spray-applied insulating foam plastic that is sprayed on as a liquid and expands 100 times it's size. What makes Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF) so effective? When applied, the liquid spray expands in a matter of seconds filling and sealing all cavities. The SPF will not sag, settle, or disintegrate. What is the difference between open-cell and closed-cell foam?Open-cell: Tiny cells of foam are not completely closed, they are broken and air fills all of the "open" space inside the material making the foam weaker and softer feeling.
Closed-cell: Tiny foam cells are closed and packed together. The cells are filled with gas helping the foam rise and expand, becoming a greater insulator. While closed-cell is stronger, has a higher R-Value, and has a greater resistance to the leakage of air and water vapor it also requires more material due to being more dense than open-cell foam. What does R-Value mean? It's the capacity of an insulating material to resist heat flow. The higher the R-Value, the greater the insulating power. What is the R-Value of open-cell and closed-cell per inch?Open-cell: R-Value typically ranges between 3.0-3.9 per inch. Closed-cell: R-Value typically ranges over 6.0 per inchWhat are the main benefits of using Spray Polyurethane Foam?1. Higher R-Value per inch
2. Eliminates air infiltration
3. Helps control moisture and condensation
4. Adds structural strength
5. Reduces issues rodents and insects
6. Water resistant How long will a Spray Polyurethane Foam application last? The foam is a one time application. Depending on the area in which the product is installed, coatings may need to be reapplied over time. What are coatings?A coating is a thermal barrier that separates the foam from the occupied spaces. For example: if a fire took place the thermal barrier would keep the combustible spray foam from the flames, therefore increasing fire resistance. What about mold?SPF eliminates condensing surfaces and reduces the potential to accumulate moisture. It also eliminates air movement within the wall cavity which leaves no nutritional value for mold to grow. Where can Spray Polyurethane Foam be applied?Just about anywhere. Exterior applications must be covered/coated to protect against UV rays. Can anyone apply SPF?No. The applicator must be certified. At minimum, the applicator should have attended a 2-3 day equipment and materials course as well as an online health and safety training. Are there any preparations to be done before SPF is applied? The surface (substrate) needs to be clean, dry, and 40 degrees or warmer for the product to properly adhere.
